A jewel at the heart of the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen’s warm turquoise waters, modern amenities, and lively partying scene make for a relaxing coastal paradise.
The Playa offers nomads an attractive work-life balance, the city boasts a well-established cafe culture, and quality co-working spaces like Bunker and NEST to network and socialise.
While not as touristy as Cancun, Playa del Carmen is an accessible city for foreigners. Many locals will have some fluency in English, the street layout is walkable, and taxis are abundant and fairly priced.
Wi-fi is readily available throughout Playa del Carmen, and most facilities are equipped with reasonable speeds.
Take a break and peruse the shops of festive La Quinta Avenita, bask on a day bed at Lido Beach Club, or sit and enjoy tamales and aguachile at one of the many delicious eateries.
Health enthusiasts will be impressed by the many yoga studios, vegetarian/vegan options, açai bowls, and healthy cafes. There’s even the Jungle Gym in nearby Tulum if you’re craving a unique outdoor workout.
Adventurous travellers can journey to marvel at the ruins of Mayan city Chichén Itzá, explore the underground cave system Rio Secreto, or take a refreshing dip in a cenote (sinkhole).
Prefer the ocean? The Playa offers plenty of snorkelling and scuba dives. Swim alongside graceful sea turtles on Tortuga Reef (of pirate fame), or delight in the colourful corals of Barracuda Reef.
